San Francisco Recreation and Parks department identifies the SF REC league as a public benefit and gives us a substantial discount on the fields. This allows us to keep the league fees low. In order to maintain our public benefit status, we must give SF residents priority at registration.

The system will notify you if you are registered or wait listed (see Waiting Pool below). You'll also get an email from the league organizers and your captain when you are added to a team. This usually happens a week or so before the games.

Sorry if you didn't make it into the league. This league sells out extremely quickly for men. There are some flaws with sign ups but the alternatives (e.g. a lottery) aren't much better. We are trying to increase the other opportunities to play in the bay area. Please check out other leagues and/or our listing of pick up games.

Players that join the league from the wait list during the season or that register for the league during the season will be charged a pro-rated registration fee.

Waiting Pool

If you don't make it into the league you'll automatically be added to the waiting pool. Players are frequently drawn from the pool throughout the season so your chances of making it into the league are fairly good. However, your number on the wait list is not as important a factor as how your skills and experience match up to the player dropping from the league whom you'll replace.

Rain Outs

On rainy days or after a long streak of bad weather, look out for an email from your captain and/or from the league cancelling the games. We generally try to get a communication out by 3 pm on game days. The SF Rec and Park site is not always reliable for cancellations. The last word will be from the league.

SF Rec is a beginner friendly league, therefore spirited play is critical. To reward and recognize spirited play we instituted the team spirit award. Each game captains should rank the spirit of the opposing team. At the end of the season the results are collated and a Team Spirit award given. Players on the winning team will get priority registration to the next season of SF Rec league play. If you would like to use a spirit award please email the league director when registration is announced. We cannot add people to teams after registration.

SF Rec honors baggage requests for mentoring situations only. For example, if you are introducing someone to the sport, we'll make sure you are both on the same time.

Level of Play

SF Rec League is a very beginner friendly way to learn ultimate. Every season we have a blend of experienced players and first-time players. The focus of the league is on education and fun - winning is secondary.

Ultimate is easy to learn and hard to perfect, so it's a great sport for beginners or for veteran athletes looking to master something different. Even if you've never thrown a disc before, you can learn to play Ultimate. You don't have to be a triathlete, but there will be a lot of running and some sprinting. If you aren't already in shape learning Ultimate might just inspire you to become so.
